The Family Cow

"The cow is the most productive, efficient creature on earth. She will give you fresh milk, cream, butter and cheese, building health or even making you money. She will provide rich manure for your garden or land. Each year she will give you a calf to raise, or sell for beef. Every day she will enrich the quality of your life as you benefit from the resources of the natural world. Quite simply, the family that keeps a cow is a healthy family." From Keeping a Family Cow, by Joann Sills Grohman.

Local Farm offers the smaller Old World Jerseys for sale as family cows, workshops on the care and keeping of a family cow, and boarding for cows whose families want to go on vacation.

Smaller Old World Jerseys

Similar in size to their British Jersey Island ancestors, Old World Jerseys are 5 to 10 inches shorter than today's standard Jerseys. As a genetic throwback to the era before refrigeration, factory farming, and bigger cows, the smaller Old World Jerseys make ideal family cows. They require less space and feed to keep as well as producing less milk and manure to handle. Today, there are about 200 registered Old World Jerseys.

Sales

Three years ago, Local Farm started breeding it's standard jerseys to minature jersey bulls, and began working even more with our calves and young stock. They lead well with a halter, stand to have their feet picked up, and are comfortable with a person's hands around and in their mouths. Local Farm offers them for sale as family cows after freshening. Call (860) 672-0229 or email farmer@rlocalfarm.com for more information about buying a family cow.

Workshops

Local Farm offers workshops throughout the year on the care and keeping of a family cow. At the workshops, you will

• Try your hand at milking.

• Learn about finding, feeding, housing, fencing, breeding, and caring for your cow.

• Make butter, soft cheese & ice cream.

• Go home with a slew of recipes and resources.

The workshops are on Saturdays, from 10 am to 1 pm at Local Farm in Cornwall Bridge, CT and are followed by a tour of local farmsteads. Cost is $35/person or $50/family (up to 4 members). For more information call (860)672-0229 or email farmer@rlocalfarm.com.

Boarding

Local Farm offers boarding for cows whose families want to go on vacation. Full Boarding Fees are $25/day or $400/month per head. Cattle must be halter trained, gentle, and arrive with a current veterinarian's certificate of health (including TB and brucelosis test within 30 days) and current rabies shot. Any special feed or veterinary care incurred during their stay is additional. Lower rates are available for long term boarders whose families visit regularly and help with their care.
