Category Archives: WEED Walk PAST YER Plants
The wet areas in Local Farm’s pasture are full of good-smelling, reedy-leaved sweet flag or calamus plants. The cows want nothing to do with them, so I keep fantasizing the pasture grasses would crowd them out. Imagine my surprise at this week-end’s Motherhouse Old Style Life-Skills Series Weed Walk when local herbalist, Alicia North, told us it makes an effective digestive-stimulating bitter, is anti-microbial, and repels insects! It was also used historically as a strewing herb to “sweeten” the air of British huts by laying it on their earthen floors as well as thatching material for their roofs. Read about more of the herbs growing in the Local Farm pasture, in the Motherhouse weblog.
